私の英語レベル

私は、学生時代に海外生活の経験もなければ海外で働いたこともない、いわゆる「純ドメスティック」と呼ばれる部類に属します。ただ、英語を使った業務への憧れがあり、英語・英会話についてはこれまでかなりの投資をしてきています。結果、TOEICについては940点。英会話はそれなりにでき、流暢ではありませんが「ビジネス中級」レベルだと思います。

Bizmates（ビズメイツ）のレッスンの振り返り

概要

今回のBizmates（ビズメイツ）レッスンでは、王道のBizmates Lessonというカリキュラムではなく、Other Lessonというトピック特化型のカリキュラムでEメールライティングを学びました。

なぜこのレッスンを選んだかというと、Bizmates Coachingのカウンセリングの中で「なかなか仕事が忙しくてレッスンを受ける気になれない」とコーチに相談したところ、「だったら、Bizmatesで仕事を捗らせればいんです。仕事で外部に公開してはならない内容を除いたうえで、プレゼンの練習したり、文書を講師と一緒に読んで解釈したり、E-mailを書いたりすればいいんですよ。そして、そっちの方が英語も上達します。」とアドバイスを受け、Assist Lessonを受けたところ、Eメールの書き方そもそもの基礎をつけたいと思ったから。

今回はEメールの基礎について学びました。

内容

今回私が受けたレッスンのテーマは「Introduction to business e-mail writing」。まさにEメールライティングの基礎を学ぶレッスンです。Eメールの具体的な構造の前に英文Eメールの心得を学ぶような形になりました。

ポイントは以下の通りです。

英文Eメールを送る前の確認ポイント

目的が明確にあるか？
内容はクリアか？
相手の立場にたって書かれているか？

この内容を踏まえたうえで、リーディング教材と、講師とのディスカッションで学びを深めていきました。

What kind of emails are not reader-oriented?

I think the emails which have lots of contents don’t motivate me to read. I mean lots of word contents…It’s really time consuming.

I understood. Wordy and lengthy emails don’t motivate you, hahaha.

Also, as Dave said, speaking and writing are different skills. What are the differences between writing emails and speaking English?

When we speak English, I can use gestures, or eye messages. I mean, there are some tools to make listeners to understand what I want to say.

Yes, you can communicate with body gesture while speaking.

Let’s proceed to the next, what are some reasons to write business email in English?

The reason I have to write emails is that I have to communicate with the colleagues overseas. It’s about the project we proceed, or it’s about general topics.

I see. You talk about a lot of topics. Do you usually write lengthy emails?

Basically no.

I see. I heard that Japanese people try to express their politeness in emails. And this leads to lengthy emails.

Ah. It depends on the company culture. Actually in my company, Most of the people write short and simple emails. Of course, in some occasions, we have to write lengthy emails, like, when we share the minutes of the meeting, we usually write long emails. But it is because the purpose of the email is sharing the fact, such as who said what, what to proceed, the deadline, something like that. So, it should be long and collect.

I see. Understand

What do you do to make emails easy to understand?

Ah. What I usually do is to write emails using paragraphs and lists. For example “There are 4 steps to proceed, one is…, second is…, third is….” By using these lists and paragraphs, the email become easy to understand from counterparts.

If you were a manager and you had subordinates, what kind of advice about writing business email would you give them?

There are three tips about writing business email in English. One is clearly writing the purpose of the email. Second is making the content clear. The other is making it reader-oriented. By doing that, the email becomes easy to understand.
